I joined the MIS Solution’s Team in 2005, taking a role as a PC and Server Support technician and working my way up to my current position as a vCIO. Since then, I have seen the inception of numerous tech advances in all aspects of IT, the cloud computing era, and now birth of artificial intelligence (AI). While a lot has happened since my start in IT, I thought that my 20th Anniversary would be a great time to reflect on the key factors that kept me engaged in my field and the motivation to keep forging forward in my knowledge and growth.
The Allure of IT Service Management
1. Dynamic and Fast-Paced Environment
Let me just start by saying that repetition is not my thing. In my role as vCIO, I get to thrive in a dynamic environment where no two days are the same. The constant flow of challenges, from managing incidents to optimizing processes, keeps the job exciting and engaging. For those who love problem-solving and critical thinking, like myself, ITSM offers a playground of opportunities to tackle issues head-on and implement innovative solutions.
2. Collaboration and Teamwork
One of the hallmarks of ITSM is the emphasis on collaboration. Each day, I get to work closely with various departments, ensuring that IT services align with business needs. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of camaraderie and teamwork that allows me to feel like I am truly an integral part of an organization’s success.
3. Opportunity for Continuous Learning
The field of IT is ever-changing, with new technologies and methodologies emerging regularly. I have enjoyed working in ITSM where I get to be at the forefront of these advancements, gaining exposure to the latest tools, practices, and trends. This continuous learning environment not only keeps the work stimulating – but also provides ample opportunities for professional growth and development.
4. Making a Tangible Impact
In ITSM, the work you do has a direct and noticeable impact on the organization. Whether it’s improving service delivery, enhancing user experience, or increasing operational efficiency, I’ve genuinely been able to see and experience the fruits of our labor here at MIS. This sense of accomplishment and the ability to drive positive change is a significant motivator for me, as well as many others in my field.
5. Diverse Career Paths
ITSM offers a variety of career paths and specializations, from incident management and problem management to service design and strategy. This diversity is the reason that my own career has not exactly been linear and has allowed me to find and redefine my roles that align with new strengths and interests as they emerge. The appeal of working in IT Service Management with its dynamic nature, collaborative culture, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact has kept me here for 20 years! For those who are passionate about technology and thrive in an environment of continuous learning and improvement, ITSM offers a fulfilling and rewarding career. And… …should you connect with anything I’ve said here, I encourage you to check out our new opportunities here at MIS Solutions. I’d love to have you on our team! Sincerely, Duane Taylor (20-year IT Veteran)
