  1. Sending voice signals
  2. Transmission 
  3. Receiving voice signals 

Sending voice signals:

For voices to be transmitted over the internet, it must be done in compressed data packets. Voice calls are made into voice data by turning the voice signals into digital data. All VoIP-enabled devices have an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), which is responsible for this. 

The generated voice data is then packaged into small data packets. These data packets make it easier for large voice files to be transmitted over the internet. These data packets contain information like the source of data, IP address destination, and sequencing data. 

All of that information makes sure the data packets are not lost and are transmitted safely to the receiver. Popular codecs (data compression devices) compress the data. The VoIP gateway converts analog signals to digital data. 


IP (Internet protocol) is what helps route the data packets over the Internet. The packets do not have to follow the same routes, but all data packets have the IP address attached to them. This allows for faster data transfers as the routes are not clogged. 

This is one core difference between calling over the Internet instead of traditional phone service. Landlines transmit voice signals through copper wires, and this can lead to interception and eavesdropping.  

Receiving voice signals:

The receiver gets the packets of voice data at the assigned IP address. The data packets are then reassembled using the sequencing data. Once this is done, the digital data is converted to analog signals by a DAC (digital-to-analog) converter. 

The analog audio is played through the recipient’s VoIP device.
